Canon Plans to Extend the EOS Production Line

Some may have noticed that there’s a new product showed in the help-file of Canon’s photo processing software "Digital Photo Professional" v3.4.1, named Digital Rebel XS/1000D.

This means besides the 1-digit (1D and 5D series), 2-digit (40D series) and 3-digit (450D series) products, Canon’s roadmap for its EOS system extends to the 4-digit class. (I was told that there was an EOS camera with the 4-digit model number, but I don’t know about it. ^^ )

As we can deduce from the naming of EOS DSLR, the longer the number, the lower the product class. The article "Canon Rebel XS/1000D Specs Surface" posted on Photography Bay days ago, if what it told is true, proved my speculation. Here are the details:

  • 10.1 MP CMOS
  • Digic III
  • 7-point AF
  • 3 FPS
  • 2.5″ LCD
  • Live View
  • Similar Menus to the 450D (but more simplified)
  • Weight 540grams
  • Cheap Price

I don’t think 1000D is just a replacement of 400D, it should be treated as a sign that Canon’s going to develop its EOS system in 4 parallel lines. In my opinion, Canon is not just a brand-maker, but more importantly, a market-master. Nowadays, the DSLR market is growing rapidly and the competition is becoming keen. As the leader in this field, Canon’s release of 1000D is not only a market segmentation strategy, moreover, it’s a sudden strike to the cameras of the same class produced by Nikon, Pentax, Sony. It’s a smart move as long as 1000D is sold in a reasonable price.
